Senior Electrical Engineer
About You
As a Senior Electrical Engineer at StandardX, you'll lead the electrical design & build of a novel compact particle accelerator and the facility around it. You'll own the electrical infrastructure, power distribution, equipment integration, cable sizing, protection, earthing, and more, from early concepts through to operation.
This is a practical senior role for someone who has delivered systems end-to-end, not just specified them. You'll be as comfortable troubleshooting hands-on on the plant floor, as you are leading design reviews or managing vendor engagements.
You will be working alongside our mechanical, nuclear, controls, and RF specialists, and will have a genuine opportunity to broaden into adjacent disciplines, contribute, and build expertise across the whole technology stack.
About StandardX
There is infrastructure that defines eras. The steam engine made the industrial world possible. The internet created an economy. StandardX is building the next one.
Some of the most essential materials on Earth are also the rarest. Isotopes are the invisible backbone of modern life: curing cancer, keeping industrial systems resilient and fuelling the fusion reactors that will power the next century. Yet the infrastructure that produces them is ageing, fragmented and increasingly unable to keep up with demand.
We're a world-class team of nuclear engineers, deep tech operators and doctoral-level scientists building the UK's first isotope refinery: a single proprietary platform, deployable anywhere, producing the full portfolio of critical isotopes at scale, turning chronic scarcity into abundance.
Exceptional team. Massive problem. If you want to work on something that matters, really matters, this is it.
Key Objectives
Lead the design, development and integration of electrical systems across the facility.
Own electrical installation, testing, commissioning and fault diagnosis, ensuring safe, compliant and timely handover to operations.
Act as the technical authority for electrical safety, EMC, standards compliance and design quality across the facility.
Develop working knowledge of controls, diagnostics and RF, supporting integration across the full EC&I scope.
Your Responsibilities
1️⃣ Electrical Architecture & Design
Develop robust electrical architectures covering the incoming supply, HV/LV distribution, power conversion, protection, isolation, control and monitoring.
Carry out electrical load analysis, power budgets, cable sizing, voltage drop, fault level and discrimination studies, and component selection.
Design and implement earthing, bonding, shielding, lightning and surge protection systems, managing EMC across sensitive accelerator systems.
Specify and design enclosures, switchgear, cable assemblies, connectors and containment in line with evolving facility requirements.
2️⃣ Documentation & Design Assurance
Produce SLDs, schematics, wiring diagrams, cable schedules, termination drawings, interface definitions and bills of materials.
Produce installation documentation, test plans, specifications and engineering reports.
Ensure compliance with relevant codes and standards (BS 7671, BS EN 60204-1, BS EN 61439, BS EN 62271, CDM, EHSRs etc.) throughout the project lifecycle.
3️⃣ Integration, Commissioning & Troubleshooting
Support integration of in-house and third-party equipment across the machine subsystems and adjacent test cells and experiments.
Lead electrical installation, inspection, testing, commissioning and start-up, and supervise contractors and technicians on site.
Lead hands-on fault-finding, root-cause analysis and corrective engineering.
4️⃣ People & Pace
Mentor graduate and junior engineers across disciplines, and help build the team's design guides, templates and procedures.
Bring pragmatic structure to fast-moving scope, balancing rigour with speed.
Work closely with controls, RF, mechanical, physics and nuclear colleagues, giving clear technical advice and engineering recommendations to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
